John McAfee

John McAfee is best known in Silicon Valley as the founder of McAfee Associates, a computer antivirus company formed in 1987. McAfee resigned from the company in 1994 and sold all his remaining stock in 1997, two years after the company went public.

McAfee was born in the UK and raised in Salem, Virginia. He has a bachelor’s degree in Mathematics from Roanoke College, which he received in 1967. His first job after college was as a programmer for NASA’s Institute for Space Studies in New York, at the height of the Apollo program. He also worked at Univac as a software designer and at Xerox as an operating system architect.

It was at Lockheed Corporation that McAfee first encountered a computer virus, known as the Pakistani Brain virus. He began immediately to develop software to combat it, a side venture which eventually would become McAfee Associates.

McAfee also founded Tribal Voice, which developed PowWow, one of the first instant messaging programs.

In 2009, McAfee’s net worth had fallen from a high of $100 million to just $4 million, a drop which The New York Times said was due to the effects of the global financial crisis and recession.

In February 2010, McAfee started a new venture in the field of bacterial quorum sensing. His company QuorumEx[8] has its headquarters in Belize and was working towards producing commercial all natural antibiotics based on anti-quorum sensing technology.

McAfee teaches yoga and has written several books on the subject. He is a member of Mensa.

As of January 2013, McAfee is living in Portland, Oregon, intending to work on an autobiography in graphic novel form. An official biography called No Domain, is also apparently in the works.
